Starting therapy is a big step — but for many people, one of the hardest parts is actually figuring out how to choose the right counsellor.

If you have ever searched: "How do I find a good counsellor?" "How do I know if a therapist is the right fit?" "What should I look for in a counsellor?" "How to choose a counsellor in Vancouver?" — you are not alone.

At Wellness Talks Health Centre, we understand that beginning counselling can feel overwhelming, especially when there are so many therapists, specialties, and approaches to choose from. The good news is that finding the right therapist does not have to feel complicated.

Our Registered Clinical Counsellors provide in-person counselling in Downtown Vancouver near Gastown, Waterfront Station, Coal Harbour, and Yaletown, as well as virtual counselling across British Columbia. Here are some important things to consider when choosing the right counsellor for you.

1. Read the Counsellor's Bio Carefully

The first and most important step is to actually take the time to read the counsellor's bio. Many people skim this section quickly, but it can tell you a lot about:

  • The therapist's personality and approach
  • Areas of specialization
  • Clinical experience
  • Types of clients they commonly work with
  • Therapy styles and modalities
  • Their overall energy and communication style

As you read through different counsellor profiles, ask yourself: Who stands out to me? Who do I feel drawn toward? Which therapist's approach feels comforting or relatable? Which counsellor seems to understand what I'm going through?

Sometimes the "right fit" is less about credentials alone and more about feeling emotionally safe, understood, and connected. At Wellness Talks Health Centre, all of our counsellors are highly trained, experienced, trauma-informed, and committed to providing individualized care. However, each therapist also brings their own personality, clinical strengths, therapeutic style, and lived perspective into the counselling room. This is important because therapy is never one-size-fits-all.

2. It's Okay if You're Debating Between Two Counsellors

One of the most common things we hear from new clients is: "I'm stuck between two therapists and I don't know who to choose." That is completely normal. Sometimes multiple counsellors may feel like a good fit based on their bios, specialties, or approaches.

At Wellness Talks Health Centre, we encourage clients to take their time and trust the process of finding the right therapeutic connection. This is exactly why we offer free new client consultations.

3. Book a Free New Client Consultation

If you are unsure which counsellor feels like the best fit, booking a free consultation can be incredibly helpful. Our free 15-minute new client consultations allow you to:

  • Meet the counsellor virtually
  • Ask questions about their approach
  • Discuss what you are looking for in therapy
  • Learn how they typically work with clients
  • Explore whether their communication style feels comfortable for you
  • Share what brings you to counselling
  • Gain clarity before committing to a full session

One important thing many clients do not realize is this: there is no limit to free consultations. You are welcome to book consultations with more than one counsellor at Wellness Talks Health Centre until you find the therapist who feels like the right fit for your needs and goals. We truly want clients to feel comfortable and supported in their counselling experience.

4. Therapy Is About Connection, Not Just Credentials

While education, training, and clinical experience absolutely matter, research consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship itself is one of the biggest predictors of successful therapy outcomes. This means it is important to find a therapist you feel comfortable with, emotionally safe around, heard by, understood by, supported by, and able to communicate openly with.

The "best" counsellor is not necessarily the one with the longest bio or most certifications. The best counsellor for you is often the one you feel most connected to and comfortable opening up with.

5. Booking a Consultation Through Our Secure Jane App Portal

At Wellness Talks Health Centre, all consultations and counselling sessions are booked through our secure Jane App booking portal. Jane App is a trusted, PIPEDA-compliant platform designed to protect your privacy and personal health information.

To book a consultation: click "Book Now" on our website, create your Jane App account, choose your preferred counsellor, select a free new client consultation, and book a time that works best for you. The process is simple, secure, and designed to make starting therapy feel less stressful and more accessible.

What Happens During the Consultation?

During your free consultation, you will meet with the counsellor virtually for approximately 15 minutes. This is not a full therapy session. Instead, it is an opportunity to learn more about the counsellor, discuss your goals for counselling, ask questions about the therapy process, explore what type of support you are looking for, and get a feel for the therapist's communication style and approach.

Many clients find that after a consultation, they have a much clearer sense of whether the therapist feels like the right fit.

Choosing the Right Counsellor Takes Time — and That's Okay

Starting counselling is a vulnerable step, and it is okay if finding the right therapist takes a little time. At Wellness Talks Health Centre, we never want clients to feel pressured or rushed into therapy. Our goal is to help you find a counselling experience where you feel safe, supported, understood, comfortable, and guided with clarity and care.
